Jamiel Altaheri - Promoting Equity and Inclusion in Law Enforcement
Retired police executive Jamiel Altaheri dedicated his career to strengthening trust between law enforcement and the communities they protect. His foundation in policing began with the NYPD, where he spent 11 years serving in various capacities, including police detective, police sergeant, and police lieutenant. From 2015 to 2024, Jamiel Altaheri took on executive roles with the NYPD, culminating in his appointment in April 2023 as commanding officer, Office of Equity and Inclusion.
As commanding officer, Jamiel Altaheri became a driving force for representation, hiring more minorities to serve New York City’s diverse population. He also co-founded the NYPD Muslim Officers Society and later established the Yemeni American Law Enforcement Officers Association.
In 2024, Jamiel Altaheri was selected to lead the City of Hamtramck’s police department. He set out to build a modern, community-centered agency. He refreshed the department’s identity with a new uniform patch that better reflects Hamtramck’s character, upgraded operations with data-informed policing, and created the first youth and citizen academy programs to bring residents directly into the policing process. Under his leadership, the department expanded its capabilities through new technology, improved supervision, and stronger accountability systems.
Staying committed to inclusion, Jamiel Altaheri brought greater diversity to hiring at the Hamtramck police, recognized women throughout the department, and led outreach programs that provided support to local families. He retired in 2025 and now works in general contracting. Jamiel Altaheri has a BS from Brooklyn College and an MA from Seton Hall University.
